Love My Scarf Blog Tour (with tutorial and giveaway!)

I am thrilled to be a part of the Love My Scarf Blog tour in support of the Be the Difference Foundation for Ovarian Cancer!

Love My Scarf is a scarf drive, organized by the Be The Difference Foundation, aimed at supporting the 22,000 women diagnosed with ovarian cancer each year.  They are collecting scarves during the whole month of September and are asking for donations of handmade or store bought scarves.  The scarves will be sent to cancer centers to be used as head covers for women undergoing chemotherapy.

When I was contacted by Designs in Machine Embroidery and Eileen Roche about making a scarf to donate to help reach their goal of 10,000 I quickly said yes.

Please consider donating a scarf to the Love My Scarf Challange.  To donate, look for this box at your local sewing supplier.

Scarves can also be mailed directly to:

Want to see the scarf I am donating?  I wanted to make a scarf that was easy to wear so I decided on a big triangle shaped scarf.

I used a rayon fabric because it lightweight, absorbent, and really soft so it is comfortable on your head.  I got this fabric at Joann's.  To wear the scarf you simply put the long end of the triangle across your forehead and tie the tails behind your neck.  Then you can either tuck the tails in the back of leave them hanging.

When a head scarf is no longer needed, this scarf looks cute tied as a headband, worn around your neck, or tied on your bag.

To make the scarf, I started with one yard of fabric that I cut into a 36" x 36" square of fabric and then cut it diagonally from corner to corner so I ended up with 2 triangles.  You only need one triangle for the scarf, so with one yard of fabric you can make 2 scarves.

Next the three raw edges of the scarf need to be finished. If you have a serger, you can simply run the edges through your serger and do a rolled hem.  Or you can use a rolled hem foot on a regular machine.

If you don't have either of those you can try this method.   Cut the tips of the 2 corners on the long edge about an inch from the corner and fold the edge over 1/4"  then starting with the short sides fold the edge over 1/4" and press it then fold another 1/4" and press, top-stitch close to the folded edge.  Then repeat with the bottom edge.  The corners should overlap like shown below.

And now on to the giveaway!  Designs in Machine Embroidery had donated 2 awesome embroidery packs for me to give to my readers.  The embroidery pack includes 20 support ribbon designs that would be cute to use on gifts for friends or family who are survivors.  They also would be great for fundraisers or awareness walks.  You do need to have an embroidery machine to use these.

If you would like to enter the giveaway, I ask that you plan to make a scarf to donate to Love my Scarf to help reach the 10,000 scarf goal.  Enter the Rafflecopter below letting me know that you plan to donate a scarf for your chance to win! The giveaway will close Friday at midnight.

  4. Thank you Crystal! You just emailed me to say I won! I never win anything! This is wonderful! I just bought my fabric yesterday at Joann's and while waiting to get it cut, I talked to several other people who were interested in helping too. I bought the softest fabric I could find - some ultra plush terry in red for those who need something warmer - but bright - for winter. They can double as scarves. I was debating what I would embroider and now I know :-) ---thanks!!
I am doing this in honor of my cousin Nancy who died of ovarian cancer as a young woman - just as her life was beginning. This is my way of fighting on for her.
